5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Camera! Too much incorrect information in reviews, and question section.

I have a slew of the Kasa smart outlets and they’re excellent. Cheap and just work.
I watched these cameras for a long time before trying a couple. I’m glad I did. I got them on a good sale, around 42$ each.
My buddy who is a professional security camera installer is blown away at their picture for a camera at 1/4 of his pro cam cost.
Picture quality:
The night vision is incredible. That’s usually where the picture quality lacks. Picture is crisp and clean when night vision is on.
What is even more impressive is the cameras ability to use what light it can pickup at night and keep color and clarity. I have a streetlight that is in my neighbors yard and I don’t use night vision on 2 of my cameras because it can use the available light very well.
I will say, I run these on 1080 as I don’t see any real difference at 2k. But just remember, it depends on the screen you’re viewing it on.
For me, 1080 is plenty.

Spot light:
It’s pretty good. Not “impressive” but impressive for something that is running on 5V USB.

Siren:
Yup, it makes noise. You can even set it to initiate all sirens on your network at once.

Siren and Alert settings.
YES you can turn both off when motion is sensed. I don’t know what people are doing where they can’t turn that off.

Motion sensing:
Pretty slick, you can set a irregular squares to areas of interest you want notifications. For example. One cam captures the street, but I only want my walkway. So I set that section to only alert if movement is noticed in that area. Even nicer, you can set up to 4 different sections.

Noise sensing/notification:
Far too sensitive even on the lowest setting. A good gust of wind will set it off.
This is nitpicking, but wanted to address it. All my noise sensing is turned off.

2 way communication.
It’s OK. Not great. You can hear the people through the camera OK, but the speaker to them is not that great, but again. 42-50$ it’s very good.
I will say, it’s possible that when you’re talking through the camera you mouth is far away from the mic on your phone because you’re also watching the video feed.

Install is straight forward. Mount anywhere 110v is within the 10’ reach of the cord.
I bought a 50’ USB extension cable to power one of these cameras where 110v is not nearby and it’s flawless.
Can probably power sufficiently with even longer USB extension.

Micro SD card storage:
It’s ridiculous that TP-Link hasn’t accurately answered this question.
At 1080, the 24/7 recording is approx 12gb a day. So a 256gb card formats at 219gb. Which translates to 18 days of 24/7 recording.
The takeaway, at 1080 it takes 12gb a day. Different picture quality will increase or decrease the storage requirement.

Saving from SD card.
Again. I don’t know where the issue is.
When a notification is received the on screen prompts shows you if it was a person or movement.
Touch one off them and the software jumps to that event and starts playing.
On the screen you’re watching there’s a “RED RECORD BUTTON” touch that, and it starts to record that selection of video to your phone.
You can record anything, not just an event. But the event notification just helps locate the times something happens.
Easy. No problem. Stop whining!
For those that can’t figure that out, if you need to pull the SD card for insurance or police, you have a legit reason! You won’t be pulling the card daily.

Ending thoughts.
If you’re interesting in an inexpensive but high quality camera, look no further.

5.0 out of 5 stars Details & Tips to 2k Hook up
Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on November 21, 2022
Style: CameraVerified Purchase
11.21.22~ Was going out of town for a few weeks & wanted cameras.
Our interior Victure, which I love, aged out. No longer app compatible.
The Kasa nursery cam is still holding strong, although Dual Band transfer was a challenge.

Picked up a this Kasa exterior & Eufy with the same features.

How did I decide on those 2?
Wanted SD card compatible, Dual Band, Free Monitoring with decent app.
Bc if you don't know, the App is as important as the camera so check App reviews.

Kasa is TP Link & already knew their app was good.
Well, good-ish but I've has Arlo & theirs' is way worse. (300 bucks I'll never see again)
Plus this was 50 bucks. Another point I was looking for. Done with high end & bad CS.

After 2 weeks away, where I couldn't reset if it failed, Kasa won. Eufy app repeatedly stopped.

Details on this 2k 4Mp~
* App gives live & playback
* App allows you to snap a pic or video in playback mode
* Picture is Clear as Daylight at Noon. Even on Zoom & through a window.
Yes, you can zoom but there is No Pan. When it's set, it's set.
* Perched on a shelf 6' off ground had 8' wide viewing angle
* Clearly hear incoming noises with no lag. Outgoing speaking delays a second or so
* The flash/spotlight is Bright. Pretty sure a Police Flashlight was the prototype
* 'AI' hit/miss. Trees in the wind come up as 'Person Detected'.
Birds flying around are correctly identified 'Motion'.
* No Middle ground on Notifications. Either your phone blows up or Turn it off.

The 2k Connection~
This is The Biggest deal breaker on most cameras.
You Must Have wifi hook up without 5k option
You can check it now on phone or computer.

**If you see your wifi name With And Without 5k next to it, this will work.

If not, you have 2 Options.
*Invest in a more expensive 5k camera(s) or,
**Purchase a dual band router like Netgear that gives you 2k option.
Comcast "upgrade" blocked 2k on their rented router. My owned one does not.

*** 4 Steps to Hook up***
> Download Kasa App not TP Link.
> Must connect to your wifi name without 5k next to it.
> Connect camera through app.
> Once you can see your place through app, you can reconnect to 5k.
Your 2k connection will remain connected. At least mine did from 400 mi away.

That's it. It's that easy. And It works.

If you want Pan, Tilt, Zoom~ Kasa nursey cam also works well with app.
No SD card option.
Even though it's the same app, playback is in 'Activity' icon vs same screen tap.

If anything changes I'll try to update but as of Nov 2022, I'm a fan of Kasa.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW! I've had others... THIS IS SUPERIOR ...no need to pay fees with SD card

UPDATED DEC 28, 2022 still AWESOME!....

IMPORTANT ADVICE:

1. When setting up, make sure your phone is on the same wifi network.

2. RAIN sets off motion alerts, constantly recording events that are just rain because the best typical setting is to have auto night vision on. HERES HOW TO RESOLVE....JUST SWITCH NIGHT VISION MODE TO "DAY" MODE DURING RAIN.

Here's why.... Normally, in the night vision setting, you want it on "auto ", night vision AND "smart night vision". This turns on the spotlight automatically and shows nighttime motion events in color. This is great for letting people who walk by at night know they're noticed. HOWEVER, during rain, the infrared from night vision illuminates close up raindrops constantly which triggers the motion, which triggers the spotlight, which illuminates close up raindrops even more, triggering more motion alerts. You'll never know which recorded alerts in rain are rain or a person. If you have any light at all at night, even ambient light from the porch, moon, streetlights, neighbors..."day" mode will still show a great image at night because the sensors are awesome. Try it at night. "Day" mode will turn off the infrared and spotlight, so raindrops won't be visible in the field of view. If "day" mode gives you a viewable image at night, then always switch the night vision mode to "day mode" during rain. ALSO, if you have good images at night even after switching to day mode, you might want to keep it that way anyway if you want everything at night in color and no spotlight going off. Otherwise, just switch to day mode during rain, and go back to "Auto" and "smart detection" for nighttime infrared and motion spotlight.

ORIGINAL REVIEW....

Night vision AWESOME

Person detection: PERFECT

NO NEED FOR FEES FOR THE CLOUD

SD card (you buy separately) records up to a couple weeks, then overwrites old for new. You don't need a huge SD card. No need to ever remove it! (It is a bit of a hassle to install.. use screwdriver meant for repairing glasses or you'll strip the screws)

Timeline highlights captured motion events. If it's important, you can record a permanent record to your phone from the SD card playback on the app with one push of a button on the screen.

Spotlight goes on at night when persons are detected... let's them know they're being recorded.

Sound is super clear (not sure if two way conversation is good, but you can hear conversations, animals, birds, cars approaching.

I really like this security camera. It gives fantastic picture quality and audio and was super easy to setup with the App. You don’t need a very large capacity micro sd card to get lots of hours. It records 24:7 and sends alerts upon sensing motion. You can set up the motion zone as needed to pinpoint the area you want to focus on. It allows for 2-way audio and even has a panic alarm button. Best of all - No Subscription required!! The night vision has 3 options and works great. Unbelievable that you get all this for less than $50

Everything is good.

One special technical note to anyone wondering about running USB extensions - I successfully tested 2 inline Amazon Basics 32' USB 2.0 cables and still the LED lights could be powered on. Any more than that and it became problematic.

The app does have a few bugs, also it is missing some easy features to add in along with some more complex ones. But overall very good. I have five of these outdoor ones and two of the indoor ptz ones.

The price is amazingly cheap for the quality. My camera is about 300 feet from my gateway and no problem getting a signal. Buy it !

We wanted a camera for live streaming the side yard of our house that cannot be seen and, therefore, cannot be enjoyed from any window. This KASA Cam Outdoor camera gives us an incredibly sharp picture both day and night, and we couldn't be happier. Because we use it exclusively for live streaming, we cannot comment on its ability to detect motion or record. We love the fact that this camera is not battery powered. We initially purchased a camera from another manufacturer that was, but it was returned because, contrary to the manufacturer's description, the battery in that camera drained and required charging after only 48 hours of live streaming. It should be noted that, when we first set up our KASA Camera, we got a message every 10 minutes or so asking us whether we wanted to continue with live streaming. However, we corrected that problem by simply turning off the default motion detection feature.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5/5, could be 10/10 with a few tweaks

After 3 months of use, seeing great reliability, fantastic image quality (including super-sharp night/infrared), exactly the functionality I was looking for with a 120G SD card without having to pay for a subscription, and very good hardware/mounting features. Overall, a far better device than my Rings.

The only downsides for the way I use it are a non-zoomable live view (which should be an easy software fix), and the power supply. Rings come with a standard cord and three-prong 110 plug, and the Kasa includes a much shorter USB-A plug and apparently non-waterproof power supply, limiting placement.

Overally, a great camera that could be fantastic. Highly recommended for image quality and available recording/playback features without the added cost of a subscription.

For $45 the Kasa outdoor cam knocks it out of the park. Clear video, powerful yet easy to use software, and feature packed. This unit will serve the security novice or pro well.

USB A power is the only quirk or setback, but you can easily work around this. Stick in a micro SD, combined with cloud event clips, and you ain't gonna miss nothin'.

Well done, TP-Link....well done.

Although this is a Wi-Fi enabled camera, it does require you to use the included, USB power cord and adapter.

Pros:
- Very good camera quality (2k video)
- Selectable Color or Black/White (Infared) night time video. Very clear (See included pictures).
- Has ability to store 24/7 video on SD card (up to 256GB microSDXC card, not included, but about $33 from SanDisk on Amazon)
****Warning on SD Card... Can not use -Samsung 256 EVO Card****
- Inexpensive Subscription options from Kasa. $3 per month per camera or $10 per month for 10 cameras.
- You can use the SD card option to record 24/7 video and the subscription at the same time.
- Setup is Extremely Easy with the IOS Kasa App. The app takes you step by step through the setup with what and how to do what you need to set this up.
- The camera allows for customization of alerts, alarms, lights and activity zones.
- The IOS (unknown about the other android app) works very well and integrates with with other Kasa devices and lighting!

Cons:
- Although this is not a con for me, you have limited options if you want to use this as a FREE subscription ( you get what you pay for - nothing)
- The USB power cord is integrated (built in) to the camera. As that this is an Exterior camera it requires you to drill (if you want to connect it to internal power so that it is harder for someone to unplug) a 1/2 hole to get the USB A connector through the hole.
- The USB cable should go through the mount to prevent easy access to possibly cutting/damaging the cable

Overall I have been impressed with Kasa Cameras and this one in particular. I will continue to buy more of these to add to my portfolio.

Pros:
Excellent Picture quality even in the dark.
Very easy to set up and use.
Very high quality build.
Great price.
I have the KD110 doorbell as well but the ""Starlight" camera on these are much better at night.
They have lots of settings to customize how they work.
You can use "Smart actions" on the Kasa app to automate certain things.
For example if one of the cameras detects motion you can (if you have one of KASA's Smart Plugs) turn on a lamp or light in your house to simulate someone home etc.
I have found SD card problems can be solved by formatting / testing the card first exFat prior to install.
Good but not perfect Alexa integration.

Cons:
The 10' USB cable on the side of the camera leaves much to be desired.
Should be integrated into the mount not exposed.
Smart actions should include letting you specify "Person Detection" to trigger a secondary action.
Person detection is great but it should have its own settings for activity zones like motion detection.
These cameras now make my KD110 from Kasa look bad, wish that had this camera in it.
Like the Doorbell, two way communication is not possible from an Alexa Echo device.
You can hear outside but can't talk to person/intruder from Alexa.
Would be nice if a detection could trigger Alexa to automatically connect to and display the feed from the camera that sensed something (person detection especially).

I've been using a Nest camera for over 10 years in my home. When somebody was at my door at 3am I realized I needed a camera watching the front door. The new Nest cameras outdoor have issues with going offline. I even upgraded my internet to blazing speeds and a new wifi mesh full signal to the camera and they still go offline intermittently and it's not just me. I've been on the forums and many others have the same issues. I've tried most every other camera out there also. Most only start to record when there is motion and you end up getting a clip of somebody walking away by the time the camera actually turns on. This new Kasa camera has a crystal clear picture day and night. What I like about it, is that you can set it to record 24/7 to a huge sd card and view the alerts without a subscription. If you want to download the videos you would need the cloud subscription, but if I really needed to save one, I could just take the card out of the camera. I have it just up high enough where it can't be reached on my garage and it covers my whole driveway. It's side by side with the Nest outdoor cam that is by the way 4 times more expensive and it's out performing the Nest camera every day. It gives me quicker alerts to motion, better quality video, and it's much easier to access than having to log into the Nest app. The app they use for this Kasa camera works well and keeps me up to date about who's at my front door and it does it immediately. I'll be buying more at this price and performance for sure.

I replaced my outdoor Foscam with this KASA camera (I'm going to replace my indoor ones too). Foscam for some reason has just proved to be unreliable. When I get an alert and try to see what's going on, it's hit or miss trying to connect with my Foscam. With Kasa, it's as reliable as my Ring doorbell camera. It just works. I love that it records to the micro SD card 24/7. I only wish the app would allow to change that to record if motion was detected only, instead of all the time, but it's like having 24/7 surveillance which is nice. Everything about it is better than Foscam and the quality is as good or better than Ring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Outdoor Camera-Works Well with Alexa

Camera is very well made. The fit and finish is precise and properly sealed for exterior applications. The night vision in color is superb, especially when the embedded extra bright LED lights are turned on.

The adjustment controls are very comprehensive both in terms of image management as well as motion detection and alarm sensitivity. You can activate alarm notifications using both motion and or sound detection. And the motion sensitivity is adjustable.

I installed three cameras under the eaves of our home. I had to run USB extension cords from the adapter to the cameras but that was a small price to pay not to have battery replacement duties on an ongoing basis.

The ability to store videos on an SD card (not included) is a real bonus. This avoids having to subscribe to a "pricey" monthly plan in order to see past events. They do offer a plan if you want to easily download videos of events. However, you can download snapshots of events for free from camera to your phone pix library. A rough edge work around for downloading videos is to record a video during playback using one phone to playback and another phone to record from the screen of phone 1. I have found that for most needs, a picture of an event and a person/vehicle is all I need.

The cameras are white so I decided to paint them a darker color to reduce obviousness. If you do, be sure and properly mask (I used blue painter's tape) both the front camera glass and the small hole that is used for the microphone on the bottom of the camera.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than blink
Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on July 28, 2022
Style: CameraVerified Purchase
We originally had net view, the memory card would never format and we couldn’t see past recordings, then we replaced it with blink outdoor cameras. They worked great with live views and saved videos and the best part about blink was the span in which the lens captured was awesome, more coverage area, however it never recorded anything of significance. I saw bugs and spiders but when someone pulled up it wouldn’t record. Crazy! Plus always having to replace the batteries got to be expensive. Meh.

We purchased 2 of these to replace the blink outdoor cameras and while the coverage area isn’t as good as blink, they record everything, we don’t pay for the cloud we use the 128gb microchip and it works super good. These cameras detect motion, sound and even a person and will distinguish between each one on my notifications, which helps weed out having to search through all the recordings. The best thing about these cameras is that it also continuously records so if you want to see a certain time frame without any notifications you can just scan through the time blocks.

We have also started using these to replace our indoor cameras and they’re amazing too. All in all great cameras, definitely worth the money to us.

Very pleased with my purchase. Easy to install & setup, image quality good. Perfect to visualize what's going on remotely at the chalet. Even with a bare 16gb microSD card, the one I had on hand at installation time, it can record almost 48 hrs of video a 720p. Very good!

Perfect if you don't want to subscribe to some cloud type plan. Just insert a micro SD card and you can retrieve recordings any time you like! Picture is clear and the night vision is fantastic! Occasionally have trouble accessing remotely, but not sure if that's due to my crappy AT&T service or anything else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Kasa product

Works great for what I needed to monitor outside. Wish there power cord was a bit longer and maybe a heavier gauge wire. Overall, fairly quick response, great at motion detection and clear images. I’d buy again for the price

Just bought another one of these guys! The only recommendation I have is investing in a faster larger capacity SD card. The first one I bought has a 64mb card and the newer one I opted for a 256mb Lexar professional card and there’s a clear difference.

Either way, I love these Kasa Cams and might add a 3rd in my back yard.

I use Kasa for all my home devices, and this camera was a great addition. Easy to set up, doing everything I wanted it to do.
